Optimizing the Emergency Department

CLIENT(S):

Montage Health Emergency Department

INDUSTRY:

Healthcare | Hospitals & Health Systems

PROJECT SUMMARY:

Improved Emergency Department patient throughput and operations through advanced analytics and dashboarding

SERVICES
TECHNOLOGY

EPIC, Tableau

OVERVIEW:

Emergency department leadership turned to Kleer to help them close efficiency gaps in the system. Drawing on existing operational data, we developed a comprehensive dashboard measuring key performance indicators to identify potential efficiencies. We modeled data and designed analytics to track patient flow metrics, aiding in the identification of areas for increased efficiency and improved overall department efficiency.

THE CHALLENGE:

Not only did Emergency department leadership need a way to identify patient flow metrics, they also needed to provide evidence of the bottleneck, signaling the necessity for hospitals support in moving inpatients out of the emergency department beds. The urgency of needing to relocate patients to ensure the availability of beds for incoming cases and maintaining the efficiency of the department needed to be visualized to support conversations with the hospital units.

THE SOLUTION:

Our comprehensive and automated Tableau dashboard is now pushed to leadership daily. The dashboard includes analytics for Prior Day, Current Month and Rolling 3 month data, as well as readmission analytics and average active patients x hour of day.

RESULTS:

Armed with our analytics, leadership has been able to support their request to move inpatient boarders out of the emergency beds earlier in the day, before they start to experience the stress of a bottleneck. Leadership also regularly uses information to identify areas of improvement with clinical care by analyzing the emergency department readmission analytics.

CONCLUSION:

This case study represents a prime example for how Kleer's team can partner with internal staff and leverage existing data to drive improved operations. The initial analytics request began as a basic inquiry but evolved through our conversation, highlighting the importance of supporting evidence. This data is essential not only for discussions with the hospital but also for identifying improvements to operations within clinical areas.
